Pronunciation – British English – ch
I am often asked by students how they can lose their accent and obtain more of a British style when speaking the English language. Of course, this takes work, but it is possible with practice.
Some areas of the English language are a little complex.
Let’s look at one of these the – ch sound and spelling. The letter sequence ch has three unique sounds:
A. Firstly, the most typical is the way it’s pronounced in words such as:
cheek, chocolate, cheap, chair, chain, such, ditch, beach
B. Secondly, words that have been taken from Greek into English
the ch– sounds like a k:
tech, chrome, school, chaos, chord, stomach
C. For the third group, which are words taken from French into
English the ch– sounds like sh-:
chef, machine, moustache, Michelle, champagne
